Gervase Peterson was there at the very beginning — one of the original sixteen castaways on Borneo, the charismatic, wisecracking heart of the Pagong tribe in the season that started it all. He was also, by his own admission, the worst swimmer out there, which made for one of the show's first great underdog beats: handed a life ring just to finish a swimming reward, he then got picked as Pagong's rower in an immunity challenge and out-paddled Tagi's Kelly Wiglesworth, an actual whitewater rafting guide. He made it to seventh before the Tagi alliance's machine reached him.
Thirteen years later he returned for Blood vs. Water a savvier, funnier veteran and went deep, riding the Coconut Bandits alliance with Tyson Apostol all the way to the end. He finished third — though the bitter jury handed him zero votes, with Tyson taking the win. From the first season to a strong modern run, he's a living bookend for the whole show.
