The story

Dan Barry brought a genuinely extraordinary résumé to Panama's Exile Island season — a retired NASA astronaut and physician who had walked in space, now testing himself against the elements on the older men's tribe. Thoughtful and accomplished, he was exactly the high-achiever the show loves to cast.

But the early season was brutal on the older men, and the physical grind and shifting numbers caught up with him; Dan was voted out in eleventh. A remarkable life that made for one of the more unlikely Survivor backstories.
